Defiler guide by Swimboy63

DEFILER
I play defiler as a spell casting tank, whom with the right items, can sometimes even tank 5 enemy heroes and significantly damage/kill all 5 of them. Pretty IMBA if you ask me.

Ultimate
Unholy Explusion

her form. The spirits may not be directly controlled
but will attack nearby enemies and will attack any
unit that the Defiler directly attacks. When Unholy
Expulsion ends, the spirits will heal the Defiler.

Level 3 : Summons 16 spirits
Mana Cost 200/300/400
Cooldown 100 seconds

Spirits heal you for 25% of the damage they dealt. Max 1000 health heal.
Skill Explanation: This spell makes you one of most feared heroes in the game. Enemies will flee at the sight of your spirits. Pop this ulti when you are hitting towers, in big team fights, and in pushes.

Item Build
1. Post Haste

Gives you that extra movement speed to chase down heroes, escape, and lets you TP all over the map to farm.
2. Helm of the Black Legion

A crucial early game item, and crucial to your item build. Gives your HP regen, more HP, and a chance to block damage. First step to becoming a tanking spellcaster.
3. Sacrificial Stone

Once made, actively work to get kills to get charges on this item. If you have 5+ charges on your bloodstone, you will be very tough to kill even if all 5 heroes are focusing on you.
4. Talisman of Exile

Beginning item.
5. Frostfield Plate

The final item to your tank build. Adds another AOE frost attack and gives you armor. You are very buff at this point.
6. Totem of Kuldra (Luxury)

A luxury item that helps stack with your intelligence and gives you another crowd control spell.
Strategy
Early game:
Try to solo middle lane if possible. Focus on last hitting and denying. You are pretty squishy early and you need to farm a Helm of Black Legion asap. Once your wave of death is level 3, you can start nuking your enemy lane heroes. At level 7, you should have level 4 of your wave and also your ultimate, so you can make a serious push at the first tower. Pop your ultimate, wave creeps and/or enemy heroes to ward them off. With a help of a teammate or two, the first tower in middle can be taken down quite quickly when you hit level 7. You helm of black legion should be farmed at this point and you should be actively farming to make your post haste.
Mid Game:
After your post haste is made, it gets much easier to farm. TP around the map where opposing teams creeps start bunching up, and farm easily with your nuke and attack. Once your sacrificial stone is made, you can start helping out your team. In team battles, pop your ultimate, pick a target to focus on, and run into the thick of things. Heroes that dare to fight you with your ultimate on will quickly run in panic as they realize what their doing. Spam your wave off every cooldown, and wave them if they are fleeing. Getting quick charges on your sacrificial stone is crucial.
Late Game:
If you haven’t died much, you’ve farmed well, and you have over 6 charges on your bloodstone, you are almost unstoppable. Farming a Frostfield Plate should be no problem at this point. Now at this point of the game, Defiler’s most important spell is silence. When pushing their rax or in a lane, using silence in the thick of fights can leave enemies dazed and not knowing what to do, allowing your team’s carries to take advantage and kill them. Again, pop your ultimate when attacking towers/rax, and spam your nuke to kill creeps. You are very hard to kill at this point, so if your ultimate is up, you can easily tank 2 to 4 enemy heroes as long as you have support from your teammates as well. Gg.
Thanks for reading my guide
thanks mate, your help gave me a 13/1/12 game.
Peace
Good guide =D
but instead of talisman of exile, buy portal key, is really good to run, and to gank
The correct item guide is:
1:Helm Of The black legion
2:Post Haste
3:Sacrifical Stone
4:Totem of Kuldra
5:Frostfield Plate (or portal)
6:Portal Key (or Plate)
Depending on the team composition you are against, Helm doesn’t always cut it. Ultimately, a cookie-cutter build will not get you satisfactory results when adaptability is a major issue. A Shaman’s Headdress may be appropriate against multiple magical dps dealers, while a Null Stone – the other alternative to SS – can offset losses in regeneration charges with spell block.
Similarly, a Frostfield Plate is excellent against auto-attack dps heroes, but suffers against magical-dps heroes. While your silence can usually solve this problem, you can’t always hit everybody you need to hit with the spell. In this situation, a good “finishing item” is the Behemoth’s Heart, which not only provides a massive amount of regeneration (easily comparable to many charges on the SS) but also increases your HP pool to make you less susceptible to burst damage.
Excellent guide
kind of a n00b question i guess, but where/how do i lvl up witchcraft at lvl 9
“…but where/how do i lvl up witchcraft at lvl 9″
It seems like changed guide to Dota hero Krobelus-Death Propet(banshee). Her 3rd skill named witchcraft is similar to Defiler’s third skill(Power in death). So i think that Swimboy63 just missed 9th level transtlating Dota guide to HoN guide.
There is no guide necessary to get high stats with defiler. do ulti and make triple kills.
just too easy and too overpowered…
Lol defiller isn’t op. Swift? insta kill ulti to anyone he finds alone. Same with MQ. Swift’s ulti becomes insane if he gets his attack cooldown to 0.4. Her ulti is powerful, yes, but its not an insta kill unless the enemies are stunned, really slowed, or channeling something. Also Assasin’s Shroud might be alright for defiller, not too good at her though.
sry for being noob but whats witchcraft?
one more tip, ur silence skill can be used for reveal invisible units, if u hit NH by silence while he stealthed, he become visible)
I think the guide its okay but it only works if ur enemys let you farm and dont gank you. i think that its always important to have a plan if things dont work as you thought. Also i dislike that u say that u have to wait to be armed to help your team, u must help them every time since defiler is very good stoping push
in general i agree with the guide, with a few slight modifications – i normally take power in death lvl 3 before l6 to have the max possible effect from the ult.
secondly – ive found that if you are having hard time with some agi damage dealers like dark lady then its a good idea to get a barbed armor to conter them.
seriously. you wont be needing that helm, it is too costly for your first item. also it will be on the way in spamming your WOD. if u want survival u should just have bought glowstone early and upgrade it into sacristone midgame. -,-
I agree with seeker. Helm is a waste of money. I usually go boots, sacrificial stone, then I change the next items based on who i’m facing. Can either get shaman’s headdress, frost field, barbed armor, or behemoth’s heart.
I like to get ghost marchers because you move hella fast, but post haste is nice to.
Great guide. Helped me alot. Got 7.0.11 in a game thanks to this one.
i would likw to ask do the nullfire blade stop defiler s ulti?
lol troll fail.
I will humor you: No, once the Ulti is activated nothing can stop it but killing the defiler or letting it run its duration. (Cronos ulti freezes them too)
i think this was a kinda good guide….dont play defieler mush so i followed this and i got my first annihilation xD
I liked playing Defiler or Death Prophet(in Dota) but i was lacking some info. Thanks for filling it
I liked ur guide, good job
Update guide plz !!!!!
Nope, Chronos ult does not stop the defilers ulti, level 7 chronos tryed to jump me with ulti up and got destroyed in seconds before the chronofield even came down.
guide is ok, but you dont go always for a helm.
if you play against a nukeheavy team (pyromancer etc) you rather take a mystic vestments and go directly for a sacstone. (agaisnt much int you make the mystic vestments into a barrier idol after the sacstone, to make your team even more powerfull in teamfights [if you dotn have a supporter going for barrier idol])
post haste and portal key are nice items to have, although if you play defiler you just run in and the enemy has t o come for you.
so rather tank up with a behemoths heart then a helm, because this item will help you more in lategame then a helm, which becomes pretty useless agaisnt nearly any carry.
PS:
also decent items against physical dmg (hardcarries) is a stormspirit do inactivate a carry or sspirit yourself while ur ulti is already up and you are in the middle of the clash. and it even gives you some more movementspeed.
same with void talisman
