Tempest “A very ancient and fish-like smell” guide
Note: I’m still very much a new player. This is a very simple and straightforward “guide” for people who have never played Tempest or many int characters in general. Please feel free to write a much more detailed one, should you be more knowledgeable than I
)

Spirits born of the elements, Tempests howl
across the land raining fire and ice alike, indeed
even calling great meteors from the heavens.
Summoned of old by the Beast Horde, these
ethereal beings now are summoners themselves,
bringing elementals and even shadows of themselves
onto the battlefield. Even their allies view these
strange beings with awe bordering on fear.

Spells
Glacial Blasts

The Tempest blasts a target enemy with
icy winds, chilling it every two seconds.
Being chilled causes the target to take
damage and be stunned briefly.
Level 1 : Deals 30 magic damage, stuns for 0.6 seconds, 1 impact
Level 2 : Deals 40 magic damage, stuns for 0.6 seconds, 2 impact
Level 3 : Deals 65 magic damage, stuns for 0.6 seconds, 2 impact
Level 4 : Deals 80 magic damage, stuns for 0.6 seconds, 3 impact
Mana cost 110/130/150/160
Cooldown 15 seconds
Thoughts: A decent stun spell. Mostly just annoying early game, but very important late game for assisting in chase downs.
Elemental

The Tempest sacrifices a target unit
and extracts from it the very elements
that composed its being. With these
elements, the tempest creates three
Elementals under his control.
Level 1 : Elemental 200 health, 2 armor, deals 16-24 damage
Level 2 : Elemental 225 health, 3 armor, deals 24-32 damage
Level 3 : Elemental 225 health, 4 armor, deals 34-42 damage
Level 4 : Elemental 275 health, 5 armor, deals 43-51 damage
Mana cost 170
Cooldown 35 seconds
Elemental effects
Kills target giving gold and spawns 3 elementals in its place
After each Elemental has attacked 6 times it spawns a duplicate of itself
Thoughts: Easily one of the best farming abilities early game. As long as you’re smart with your choice of creep to use it on, they’ll usually spawn 8-10 of themselves before they run out. Excellent for denying early game and making sure you get last hit on almost all of their creeps, letting you focus on denying.
Meteor

Attuned to all things natural and cosmic,
the Tempest calls down a meteor that ignites
a target area, causing units within to take
damage over time.
Level 1 : Damages targets in radius, 3% maximum health per second for 7 seconds
Level 2 : Damages targets in radius, 4% maximum health per second for 7 seconds
Level 3 : Damages targets in radius, 5% maximum health per second for 7 seconds
Level 4 : Damages targets in radius, 6% maximum health per second for 7 seconds
Mana cost 95/110/125/140
Cooldown 20 seconds
Thoughts: Difficult to land properly, as the cast range is quite short, but if you can, it is a devastating spell to have on a group of enemies. Combined with your ult or several other stuns/slows, it’s a very mana efficient way to pump out the damage.
Ultimate
Elemental Void

The Tempest uses his power over the
elements to create an extremely low
pressure system at target location,
causing fierce winds to drag all enemy
units toward that target location, dealing
damage over time.
Level 1 : Deals 30 magic damage per second in 500 radius, Applies Elemental Void to targets in 400 radius, Deals 60 magic damage to targets in 150 radius.
Level 2 : Deals 50 magic damage per second in 500 radius, Applies Elemental Void to targets in 400 radius, Deals 100 magic damage to targets in 150 radius.
Level 3 : Deals 70 magic damage per second in 500 radius, Applies Elemental Void to targets in 400 radius, Deals 140 magic damage to targets in 150 radius.
Mana Cost 200/300/400
Cooldown 200/190/180
Channeling Time 4 seconds
Elemental Void effects
Silence
Perplexed
Disarmed
Immobilized
Thoughts: Possibly the most dangerous ult in the game. With a solid team, good timing and a certain item, this can give your team a near unbeatable advantage.
Item Build
Typically I go fairly standard at the start:
2x
Mark of the Novice
1x
Pretenders Crown
1x
Runes of the Blight
Thoughts: It’s very important to be defensive with tempest for the first 6-8 levels. He’s extremely squishy and not very fast. Remember to constantly keep track of your money and to buy while you’re fighting so you don’t lose much money if you do get ganked.
Eventually you’ll be buying:
2x
Talisman of Exile
1x
Marchers
At this point you can decide if you want to buy
Steam Boots or
Post Haste
Thoughts: Either will work. The stats of the Steam Boots are hard to give up, but the mobility provided by Post Haste is sometimes too good to ignore. If you find you’re constantly out of position and need the portal, go with Post Haste, but if your team calls ganks/help early enough for you to get across the map, Steam boots will be better in the long run.
Here is where you can branch off from what I suggest – I’ve just found that these items are great in situations that I’ve come across:
1x
Restoration Stone
Thoughts: My favourite item in the game for Tempest. After level 16, you should have enough mana to drop every spell you have, pop the Restoration Stone (refreshes the cool down on all your spells) then drop every spell again. Absolutely deadly when you can meteor-ult-stone-ult in rapid succession. No hero will survive this (team dependent obviously), and with good use, you can get off 4 ult’s off in the time it would take for 2.
1x
Totem of Kuldra
Thoughts: The sheep is good fun, but really, this is just another high stat piece. With this and the Restoration Stone, you should almost never have to run back to base to fill up.
1x
Portal key
Thoughts: A fantastic little tool to get in quick and fire off your ult in the middle of a battle. Very helpful if you didn’t get Post Haste boots.
1x
Assassin’s Shroud
Thoughts: Another way to get in close without getting mass-targeted. Pop the invis and run to the highest density of enemies and pop your ult. Or pop your ult, then run and invis to escape after everyone tries to retaliate.
There are numerous other item combinations, but I’ve never had a game go longer than this point, so I can’t really say what I would get after this (and I was never a DOTA player, so I’m still rather new to this whole HoN business). If anyone would like to add to this just message me or post in the comments!

5. Meteor
6. Elemental Void
7. Elemental
8. Glacial Blasts
9. Meteor
10. Meteor
11. Elemental Void
12-25. Whatever you’d like!
Thoughts: I might be slightly off on the levels, but typically I like to get Elemental to level 3 asap. It’s simply too good as a farming tool to not do it. Glacial Blasts is a decent save ability, so getting that up second is a pretty good idea, and Meteor doesn’t usually come into play until late game (for me anyway). Ult at 6/11/16 and you’re all set.
I hope this guide was helpful, as I’ve found all the guides here very informative as I try to learn all the different characters. Tempest has quickly become my favourite character, and I hope this guide might convince you to give him a try!
meteor is one of the greatest spells he has mann..
good guide, meteor in early game is a waste of skillpoints and mana, i totally agree with your build. Works awesome!
Just played sdem as tempest and I agree, meteor is a waste of skill poins in early game.
Oh, and I love your guide
It helped me a lot.
good quick simple guide. need to mention tempest’s ability to jungle early freeing up a second solo lane. also need to mention shrunken head to stop from the ult being interrupted with a stun. i think restoration stone is a bit unnecessary, if ur team is decent and ur ulti placement is effective then there is no need for a second ulti.
try bottle and summon for start. pull creeps from jungle (so they can grow another set of creeps for you to feed), level up as fast as solo lane, the fastest record i heard is 6 mins to get a portal key… BTW, calculate the creeps sprawn time will be useful for this kind of farming
Not bad, but I think portal key should be considered a ‘core’ item for Tempest, and probably Shrunken Head as well. Your ult is what makes you so dangerous, and due to it’s long cooldown you need to make sure it counts. If you just ‘run in’ to a team fight any competent team is either going to focus you down very quickly or they’re going to scatter in a way that your ult will be much less effective should you decide to drop it.
For Tempest it’s all about your placement, and I see no better item than the portal key.
My input, Meteor is something to pick up at lvl 8 or 9 and not so early. I start with elemental and farm woods with mana pots for the first several levels and just save up for port stone. There is nothing more brutal than a team fight starts up and at lvl 8 tempest ulting out of left field. Finally I never pick up resto stone but the one time that I did I didn’t use it to piggy back ults but instead i stacked meteors. You want to see a team of 5 lose health fast then stick them in ur ult on top of 2 meteors. I think I figured it out and you yourself end out knocking a good 65% out of all them by yourself.
The key here is you are a TEAM PLAYER. Too many tempests think they are some kind of 1 man army but at the core you should be working with your team and rarely independent of them
Although it is a quick simple guide for newcomers tempest is pure support and dont expect Hat-Tricks or Annhiliations As Mack says “The Key here is you are a TEAM PLAYER” He’s also right Meteor should be picked up later in the game. Loads of mana pots and Intel boosts at the start jungle get Portal Key and Shrunken Head. After this your set to own… Remember though pure support char
Good DotA players use radience (aka mock of brilliance) for this hero.It improves his ulti a lot.
the thing with temp is – it is an awesome hero in a good skilled team. BUT it can also be almost useless if your team is doesnt know how to work with it imo.
about items – if the enemy doesnt have aoe disables/stuns i would normally preffer assasins shroud over shrunken head especially if in a random pub game.
second – if you are new to temp – try to hit meteor-ult combo instead of just ult whenever possible since most of your damage comes from meteor/eidons not the ult.
last – buy wards, and start at the very beginning of the game and put them down so you cant be ganked in the jungle. If you manage your eidons properly that 4 less mana potions is not a problem and is worth it if they DO attampt an early gank on either you or the lane close to you.
what I do with tempest is key meteor ult stone if they try to kill your team stone meteor ult
Hello there m8. According to what I’m seeing u mean that tempest should be used for lanes? I sincearly believe that tempest should go woods and that he should buy 4 manapotions, 2 health potions and a “guardianring” which later will become (with another item) ring of the teacher which will be evolved into Nome’s Wisdom. If you just go woods and don’t get ganked and if you don’t go to any lane trying to gank and only go back to base 1 time and that time could be when you don’t have any more mana potions. You get some more and go back to the woods
If you do like this you WILL HAVE PORTAL KEY IN A MAXIMUM OF 12 MINUTES. Then you are set to go and gank as lot as u want and can. Hint( Plated greaves works just fine cause you don’t need steamboots or postalhaste when u’ve portal key. Though, Postal Haste could be useful to teleport to somelane and push hard or just defend).
Skills:
1: Elemental
2:Glacial Blast
3:Elemental
4:Glacial Blast
5:Elemental
6:Elemental Void
7Elemental (That means if u don’t have portal at this stage, otherwise you go glacial Blast)
8:Glacial Blast
9: +
10:Glacial Blast
11: Elemental Void
12:Meteor

Really great Guide to Tempest, i will try it later.
i would like to add something to the Item build.
-Null stone.
i think you can figure it out why ^^
This is a decent guide for a laning tempest, however tempest’s real strength is in the jungle. To jungle, buy a courrier (if another support on your team does not), then spend the rest of your money on mana pots. Health pots are unnecessary if you use your Elementals properly. Constantly creep pull for the solo lane, and stack the easy creep spawns as often as possible. An 8 minute portal key is quite easy to acheive in the jungle. Level your skills as Chemas wrote below, get a portal key, then your boots, then a shrunken (unless the other team has no way to stop your channel, which would be rare.) Gank early and often, initiate team fights with your portal key and ult. Do not level meteor before level 6, I usually start getting it at level 7….
